Theminor program inCommunication andMedia Studies focuses on broad-
based and adaptable skills that can enrich the lives of graduates inmany diverse
fields. The ability to write and speak well, the ability to think critically about
differing media and modes of communication, the ability to recognize quality in
written, visual, andmultimedia texts—theseare fundamental skills for lifewithina
culture increasinglydefined by themovement of information.
Students wishing to declare a minor in CMS will complete the same
application process required to become a CMSmajor. Before admittance to the
minor program, studentsmust complete four courses with a combinedGPA of at
least 2.5:

In addition, applicants must successfully complete a writing assessment
administered by theTestingCenter and evaluated by theCMS core faculty.Once
these requirements aremet, students will be admitted to theCMSminor andwill
beable toenroll in all upper-divisionCMS classes.
Studentswho choose to apply either CMS 2100 or COMM1110 toward their
General Education core requirementsmust substituteanother course tomeet the
18-hour requirement for the CMS minor. As substitutes, students may use any
3000-level or higher course with a CMS or COMM prefix, except the internship
classesCMS 3901, CMS 3902, or CMS 3903
