 STUDENTS SAY
While CIVS main purpose is to provide information services to anyone who needs assistance, its secondary purpose is to provide student employees with professional development.
This is what one current student wrote after obtaining a job before she graduates in December 2018.
I was 19 years old when I began working for Campus Information & Visitor Services. Today, I am 21 and so much has changed. September of the year 2015, I applied for this job and began working with all intentions to gain a sense of responsibility, a sense of self, and, of course, to pocket some income. I certainly learned technical skills specific to this job, however, the transferable skills that
I can take with me when I leave this university could never be measured. As
a student assistant, I have had the opportunity to work with individuals from different cultural backgrounds and different walks of life.
Two years later, I sat in an interview with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where the first question they asked me was, “do you have experience routing calls and collecting date?” Who knew that a student assistant job on a college campus would give me all the tools I needed to obtain my dream job in the nursing field. Understanding the importance of eye contact during an interview, knowing when and how to listen attentively, understanding how to demonstrate leadership,
and managing priorities are transferable skills I gained working for the CIVS department. I believe I am truly a walking example that regardless of your dream profession, CIVS will teach you skills that you will need anywhere you go in this world.
