 DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER
Advocacy through Accessibility
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) continues its commitment of partnering with the university community to create an accessible, inclusive campus that enables students with disabilities to fully engage in and benefit from all facets of the university environment.
For fall 2016, the DRC partnered with the Veterans Resource Center to host a Self-Advocacy Skills workshop on October 27. The event was very successful, as 30 fully-engaged participants received information about self- advocacy and setting smart goals.
In 2017, nine students, including two veterans, participated and successfully completed the 2017 DRC Workforce Recruitment Program. The DRC exceeded its initial participation target of eight. Students were reported to be well prepared, polite, and had a clear sense of direction regarding their future career plans.
For 2018, students will have the opportunity to participate in a six- month mentoring program from March to August.
STUDENTS SAY
POINTS OF PRIDE
The DRC administered 268 exams in the fall of 2016
Debra White, DRC Student Support Coordinator was nominated for the Making Things Better Award.
I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Human Services in July 2017 and participated in the fall 2017 commencement ceremony. The DRC helped me greatly in achieving this goal. The accommodations provided to me by the DRC allowed me to have an equal opportunity to perform well in classes, despite having unique challenges that many other students do not have.
Many of my challenges came at the beginning and the end of my time as a student at Clayton State. During my first year, I had some accessibility issues that were addressed and fixed by the DRC. I also became extremely sick during my first year and the relationship that the DRC staff and I had with my professors allowed me to successfully complete my classes despite my struggles.
Lastly, during my final semester, I struggled to secure an internship, but the DRC staff taught me how to effectively address these issues and offered me an internship opportunity. The DRC played a pivotal role in my growth as a person and the completion of my degree.
