 CAMPUS LIFE
Lead With Purpose
Campus Life at Clayton State is more than just having a great college experience. It’s about students developing the skills and experience necessary to become active leaders in their communities.
Campus Life accomplished this goal with a number of programs dedicated to leadership and service on campus and in Clayton County.
The ninth annual Diversity and Leadership Conference kicked off in October of 2017 with a new theme purpose. The conference was rebranded as the Diversity Leadership Institute to engage students in developing their own personal action plans to address, advocate, and support social issues they were most passionate about.
The Institute’s theme, The “Stay Woke” Tour, was designed to tackle relevant current events facing today’s society– Latino/a and LGBT advocacy, incarceration of innocent citizens, and social and political discourse.
The Institute also featured a cultural celebration with a steel drum band and a food tasting of cuisine from various cultures.
More than 200 students, faculty, and staff participated in the conference.
To round out the fall semester, students volunteered to beautify the Morrow community garden next to the campus during Make a Difference Day in November. More than 100 students joined representatives from Habitat for Humanity, Morrow Community Garden, and the city of Morrow to do cleanup, landscape, and assemble benches near the garden.
Other activities Campus Life held throughout 2017 included a trip to Washington D.C. for a group of 40 students to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture during the museum’s inaugural year as a component of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend of Service and Social Justice Awareness.
Campus Life groups earned several national awards for their efforts.
The Campus Events Council (CEC) attended the 2017 Association of Promoting Campus Activities (APCA) Conference and won two awards–the APCA Best Novelty Item of the Year and APCA Event of the Year for Laker’s After Dark.
The National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS) received the President’s Award for completing 9 of 10 success pillars, including a 60 percent member induction rate for the academic year.
