50 First-Year
Students Inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society
Clayton State University cel-
ebrated the success of the best
of its first-year students in the
ballroom of the Student Ac-
tivities Center on Tuesday,
Apr. 10, 2012, with the in-
stallation of a chapter of the
national Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
Dr. Glenda Earwood, executive director of Alpha Lambda Delta, installed the Clayton State chapter and oversaw the induction of the 50 students -- the charter members of the Clayton State chapter – by chapter advisors Marcia Bouyea-Hamlet and DeLandra Hunter.
The ceremony also saw the installation of the chapter officers: Terrence Dixon, pres- ident; Alexandra Destin, vice president; Mary Tran, secretary; Priyani Patel, treasurer; Tammy Spikes, historian; Jonathan Ander- son, webmaster; and Todd Burke, editor.
Founded in the spring of 1924 at the University of Illinois by Dean Maria Leonard, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year stu- dents.

The University was recognized in the Atlanta Journal Con- stitution’s Top 100 Workplaces section, published on Sun- day, Apr. 22, as well as at an invitation-only event held on Thursday, Apr. 19, at the Cobb Energy Center. Clayton State is the only University System of Georgia institution to re- ceive this honor for 2012.
Clayton State is one of 20 institutions in the “large in-
dustry category,” which includes Woodward Academy, FedEx, Equifax, Emory Healthcare (the only other higher education-related institution in the entire 100), Chil- dren’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Ernst and Young and Verizon Wireless.
Ambassador Young Inspires
Clayton State Graduates
The 2012 Spring Commencement on Saturday, May 5, was, perhaps, a little more inspiring than the aver- age, thanks to the commencement speaker, former Atlanta mayor, Ambassador Andrew Young.
New Loch Highlights
Homecoming Pep Rally
Every university has its legends. At Clayton State University, the most famous is the Legend of Loch who has been seen in several different iterations and generation, since 1990.
A new Loch made his first official appearance on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at the pep rally for Clayton State’s an- nual Homecoming. And, while he may not be related to Godzilla or the Loch Ness Monster, he is Clayton State’s first mascot to wear the University’s blue and orange colors.
So, if you happened to see a large blue and orange creature while visiting the Clayton State campus, feel free to say hello to Loch. He’s friendly.
In speaking to a total of approximately 500 grad-
uates and a full house of roughly 1500 at both the 9
a.m., and noon ceremonies, Young made sure no one
went home uninspired, tailoring his remarks to the first ceremony (and the graduates from the College of Business, College of Health, and College of Information and Mathematical Sciences) towards opportunities and moving forward, and, in his sec- ond address (to the graduates from the College of Arts & Sciences), speaking on the theme of kindness to one another.
