Trivia Time
No Moderator!
by John Shiffert, University Relations
Since there’s nothing much trickier
than presidential politics (how do
you think Richard Nixon got his
nickname?), it seems only right that
the penultimate presidential trivia
question of the year was… a trick
question.
Who moderated the Lincoln/Douglas
debates? Well, it sure wasn’t Horace
Greeley, because there was no mod-
erator. They each just spoke to a pre-
set amount of time.
Historian/three-time former Tom
Eddins Virtual Trivia Trophy winner
Lou Brackett had the first correct
answer, followed by Rob Taylor,
David Ludley (which goes to show
that Clayton State retirees follow
Campus Review and Trivia Time),
Kurt-Alexander Zeller (who pointed
out there must have been a timekeep-
er), Jill Ellington and Brett Reichert.
Having almost beaten this particular
dead horse into extinction, we’ll go
for one more presidential trivia ques-
tion. Other than George Washington,
what president was elected president
despite the fact that he’d never previ-
ously voted for president? Send your
answers, not to Henry Clay (who
really should have been elected
president at some point), but to
johnshiffert@clayton.edu.
The Clayton State men’s soccer team lost
a heartbreaker on Tuesday, Oct. 30, falling
1-0 in the final minutes to Montevallo in
the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt
Conference
Championships
in
Montevallo, Ala.
Montevallo scored the game-winning goal
with seven minutes remaining in the
match as Pierre Omanga found the back
of the net after a pass from Patrick Dean.
The loss was a tough one for the Lakers as
the squad outshot the Falcons 23-17 and
had 11 shots on goal compared to only six
for Montevallo. The Lakers also led the
Falcons 10-4 in corner kicks. Senior keep-
er Matt Sutton finished with five saves.
The loss ends Clayton State’s season with
a 7-8-1 record on the year.
The Clayton State women’s soccer season
came to an end on Tuesday, Oct. 30,
falling 4-2 to North Georgia in the quar-
terfinals of the Peach Belt Conference
Championships in Dahlonega, Ga.
With North Georgia leading 1-0 after the
first half of play, both teams went on a
scoring frenzy early in the second half
with five goals scored in a 10-minute
stretch. The Saints took a 2-0 with 42
minutes remaining as Kelly Penston
scored her second goal of the match,
banking a shot off the side post for a goal.
Clayton State quickly answered though,
cutting the deficit to 2-1 as senior forward
Natalia Valentine scored two minutes later
off an assist from junior midfielder Lea
Notthoff, her team-leading sixth assist of
the season. Notthoff played a ball into the
box and Valentine beat the defense for her
team-leading 11th goal of the year.
The Saints came right back two minutes
later to re-establish its two-goal lead, as
Abby Trevino scored off a pass from
Penston.
The Lakers answered again less than a
minute later as Valentine scored her sec-
ond goal of the match, taking a pass from
midfielder Alicia Robinson and then beat-
ing the North Georgia defense. The goal
for Valentine was her 12th of the season
and the 32nd for her career, which is third
all-time on the Clayton State goals scored
list.
Leading 3-2, North Georgia added some
insurance with 31 minutes remaining as
Caroline Wallace scored off a rebound of
a previous shot to close out the scoring
and secure the victory.
The loss ends Clayton State’s season with
a 10-7-2 record on the year. The 10-win
season was the program’s first double-
digit winning season since 2006.
Clayton State opens the regular season on
the road in Jackson, Tenn., in the Union
University Lady Bulldog Classic, facing
two of the toughest teams that NCAA
Division II and the NAIA has to offer. The
Lakers will play perennial Division II
women’s basketball powerhouse Delta
State on Friday, Nov. 16, followed by fac-
ing the host Union, who has captured mul-
tiple NAIA national championships over
the last few years the next day.
Clayton State’s home schedule will begin
on Saturday, Dec. 1, hosting the Loch
Shop Classic. The Classic will feature
Clayton State, league opponent North
Georgia, regional opponent Lenoir-Rhyne
and Chowan. Clayton State will play
Chowan and Lenoir-Rhyne in the two-day
event.
