Women’s Basketball Holds
Off Emory in Exhibition Play, 59-57

The Clayton State women’s basketball
program raced out to a big lead Saturday
and then had to hold on in its first exhibi-
tion game of the season, defeating Emory
59-57 at the Athletics & Fitness Center.
Clayton State guard Keona Dixon hit two
free throws with three-tenths of a second
remaining to lift the Lakers to the two-
point victory. Dixon was fouled coming
down the floor just outside the three-point
arc, as the Lakers hurried down the court
in an attempt to get off a final shot.
The Lakers had led from the opening tip
until Emory guard Hannah Lilly drilled a
three-pointer in the closing seconds to tie
the score at 57. The shot capped a 16-2
run by the Eagles.
Clayton State will return to action on
Friday, hosting Southern Poly in another
exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. at the
Athletics & Fitness Center.
For the Lakers, junior center Shacamra
Jackson led the attack with 15 points, 13
rebounds and six steals. Senior Guard
Drameka “Me Me” Griggs finished with
13 points, six assists and seven steals.
Senior forward Kayla Mobley finished
with eight points and seven boards.
Belt tournament titles and finished as
tournament runner-up four times, estab-
lishing Clayton State as an elite power in
the Peach Belt.
At the national level, Clayton State teams
have advanced to the NCAA Division II
National Tournament 48 times since 2000,
including three “Final Four,” six “Elite
Eight” and fourteen “Sweet 16” appear-
ances. The culmination of that success
was in 2011 when the Laker women’s bas-
ketball team captured Clayton State’s first
NCAA Division II national champi-
onship, defeating Michigan Tech, 69-50,
in the title game in St. Joseph’s, Mo.

Griggs Named to Women’s Preseason All-Peach Belt Team
With the start of the 2012-13 women’s
basketball season just around the corner,
Clayton State senior guard Drameka
Griggs has received some preseason acco-
lades based on her fine play over the last
two years.
Griggs was one of five players to be
named to the Peach Belt Conference
Preseason All-Conference Team selected
by the league’s head coaches. Along with
Griggs, North Georgia’s Jaymee Carnes,
USC Aiken’s Kayla Harris, Armstrong’s
Mauri Wells and Georgia College’s
Shanteona Keys were also named to the
preseason squad.
“MeMe (Drameka) is very deserving of
this honor, and we are thrilled for her,”
says head coach Dennis Cox. “She has
been a huge part of our success over the
last two seasons, and we are expecting big
things from her again this year, as she
embarks upon her senior season.
Congratulations to her, as well as to the
other four players named.”
Griggs was Clayton State’s second lead-
ing scorer last year, averaging 11 points

per game. During the last two seasons, she
has been an integral part of a Clayton
State team that has a 64-5 record, winning
a Peach Belt Conference championship in
the 2011-12 season and a National
Championship in 2010-11.
The Lakers tipped off their exhibition sea-
son on Saturday defeating Emory 59-57,
and will return to the hardwood on Friday,
hosting Southern Poly in 7:30 p.m. exhi-
bition game.
