DREAMS. MADE REAL.
Clayton State University previewed its
future, and reviewed its past on the stage
at Spivey Hall on Oct. 25.
In a world-class venue where generations of
Clayton State students have had their dreams
made real, it was only fitting that President
Dr. Thomas J. Hynes, along with current
Clayton State students, Clayton State alumni
and Clayton State faculty announced the
University’s identity, as epitomized by the
statement… Dreams. Made Real.
The message of the morning’s program
was a simple one… Clayton State is a
place where dreams are made real, and it
is how Clayton State identifies itself, now
and in the foreseeable future.
As Hynes stated in addressing a crowd of
guests, community representatives,
media, Clayton State students, faculty and
staff, “this is out authentic message;
Clayton State is a place where dreams are
made real.”
As is the case with the workings of
Governor Deal’s Complete Georgia pro-
gram in University System of Georgia
institutions throughout the state, dreams
made real is nothing new or different for
Clayton State. It is something the
University has done for many years, a fact
shared most memorably by Dr. Donna
McCarty, chair of the Clayton State
Psychology Department, and a faculty
member since 1978.
“We are highlighting something that has
been here from the beginning,” she said in
explaining the dreams made real concept.
“It is the spirit of this university, a place of
genuine humanity, where I can always
find someone willing to help a student.
“Dreams made real conveys something in
words that lives in my heart, the very real
way that Clayton State has made my
dreams real.”
Hynes and McCarty were followed to the
Spivey Hall stage by three current under-
graduate students; senior biology major
Sotheavy Vann, senior business major
Clayton State’s basketball arena at the
Athletics & Fitness Center has gotten a
major facelift over the last three months,
and along with the renovation, the Laker
home court of more than 600 games will
get a new name.
Beginning in the 2012-13 basketball sea-
son, the Clayton State court will be known
as the “Mason Barfield Court,” in honor
of the Lakers’ former Athletic Director.
Barfield, who retired last fall, founded the
program 23 years ago.
“Mason Barfield’s Clayton State career
focused on students, and their athletic,
academic, and ultimately life successes,”
says Clayton State President Dr. Thomas
J. Hynes. “How fitting that we would ded-
icate a court named in his honor that has
been the site of exceptional athletic vic-
tors, as well as the site for graduations and
the conferral of more than a thousand
degrees just last year — a percentage
growth in degrees issued rivaled by only
two or three other institutions in the
University System. That such has and will
happen on the Mason Barfield Court
speaks volumes for both the University
and the former director for whom the
court will now be named.”
An official naming ceremony is planned
for Tuesday, Nov. 13, the first official
game of the 2012-13 basketball season.
Clayton State’s women’s basketball team
will play an exhibition game against an
alumni team at 5 p.m., while the men’s
