Dental Hygiene Participates in Accreditation Site Visit
Veterans Resource Center Holds
Remembrance Day National Roll Call for Veterans Day
In accordance to the American Dental
Association’s Commission on Dental
Accreditation, the Clayton State
Department of Dental Hygiene partici-
pated in the accreditation site visit
process on Tuesday, Nov. 13 and
Wednesday, Nov. 14.
The primary focus of the self-study
process is to assess the effectiveness of
the educational program in meeting (1)
the program’s stated goals and objec-
tives and (2) the Commission’s
Accreditation Standards for Dental
Hygiene Education Programs.
For the educational program, the self-
study provides an opportunity to:
1. Clarify its objectives as they relate
to:
a. Preparation of dental hygienists;
b. Expectations of the dental pro-
fession and the public in relation to
the education of dental hygienists;
and
c. The program’s general educational
objectives.
2. Candidly and realistically assess its
own strengths and weaknesses in light
of its own stated objectives.
3. Internalize the process and engage in
the kind of self-analysis essential to
effective planning and change.
4. Provide the basis for a more
informed and helpful site visit related
to the real issues including the
strengths and weaknesses of the pro-
gram.* (*Adapted and summarized

Study Process in Accreditation,”

of Postsecondary Accreditation (July

As part of the accreditation process, the
Department of Dental Hygiene previously
announced the opportunity for all interest-
ed parties to provide feedback on the
University’s Dental Hygiene Program to
its accrediting agency.
The mission of the Clayton State
Department of Dental Hygiene is to
provide career-relevant education in the
discipline of dental hygiene and to sup-
port the lifelong learning goals of indi-
viduals aspiring to careers in the dental
profession.
In addition to the Bachelor of Science
in Dental Hygiene program, the depart-
ment also operates a public dental
hygiene clinic in which Clayton State
students provide preventive dental care
for patients under the supervision of
dental hygiene faculty members. The
clinic is located in the lower level of the
Student Center Building. Clinic
appointments for dental hygiene treat-
ment may be made in person or by call-
ing (678) 466-4920.
Clayton State’s official celebration of
Veterans Day took place on Monday, Nov.
12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and featured the
Clayton State Veterans Resource Center’s
Second Annual Remembrance Day
National Roll Call.
This year’s Roll Call included the names
of those currently serving as well as the
names of the fallen. The program began at
9 a.m., with a welcome from Dr. Brian
Haynes, Clayton State vice president of
Student Affairs. Opening comments were
than made by retired U.S. Army Colonel
Dr. John Campbell, professor of Physics
and associate dean of the Clayton State
College of Arts and Sciences, who also
served as the first reader for the Roll Call.
The Roll Call also attracted media atten-
tion, with CBS Atlanta broadcasting live
during the opening ceremony and featur-
ing an interview with the Veterans
Resource Center’s Shiraz Karaa. Earlier
in the week, WYAY-FM interviewed
Karaa for an on-air lead-in to the event.
The day also featured comments by
Thomas Quinn, U.S. Army retired, and an
MBA student at Clayton State.
Community guests for the event included
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled
American Veterans, and Veterans Heart
Georgia.
