Campus Review
November 13, 2013
On Veterans Day 2013, the Student Veterans Association and the Veterans Resource Center welcomed students, faculty, staff and the
public to attend a 9 a.m. ceremony at the outdoor Lawson Amphitheater. Immediately following the ceremony, the Roll Call for
Georgia’s fallen began and a moment of silence was held.
Like the SVA, the Veterans Resource
Center is another place where student vet-
erans and active duty members can get
together to meet, get information, and just
hang out with other like-minded individu-
als who understand the military culture
and language.
“The Veterans Resource Center provides
student veterans with a place to build
camaraderie that they may miss when
they leave the military and go back into
civilian life,” says Tina Lake, the Veterans
Resource Center coordinator.
In addition to the transition into civilian
life, the VRC provides a comfortable
space for students to relax in between
classes to study, an opportunity to net-
work with other service members, and
helps direct students to programs or serv-
ices that they need to be successful on or
off campus in their academic endeavors.
Christopher Lowry, who served in the
United States Marines for four years, is a
new student to Clayton State and is taking
full advantage of the benefits the VRC
provides.
“I am able to be around like-minded indi-
viduals who have been in similar situa-
tions. It is like being around my old pla-
toon. Instant brotherhood,” he says.
Another student, Janice Jackman, who
served in the army for 25 years, shared
how the VRC has helped her transition
into academic learning. In reference to
class work, she says that the course mate-
rial given sometimes makes more sense if
it can be related to military experiences.
The VRC provides a setting that makes
that possible, and she looks forward to
going to the VRC to study and talk with
other veterans. She praises that staff on
always making her feel welcome and that
her stay is comfortable and conducive to
learning.
Clayton State has more than 400 students
that receive VA benefits from Veterans
Affairs in Financial Aid. The Student
Veterans Association and the Veterans
Resource Center are trying to help make
the transition into academic learning as
easy as possible for student veterans.
