In a Photo Finish, The Winner is…

Klute, Phillips Named All-Southeast Region
by Lee Wright, Sports Information
The Clayton State Lakers placed two players
on the 2011 NSCAA (National Soccer
CoachesAssociation ofAmerica) Division II
All-Southeast Region team.
Selected first team Division II All-Southeast
Region for Clayton State was defender Chris
Klute, while forward Matty Phillips was a
third teamAll-Southeast Region selection.
Both were also All-Peach Belt Conference
selections, while Klute was also a first team
Daktronics Division II All-Southeast Region
selection as well. Because he was selected
first team All-Region, Klute is now eligible
for NSCAA Division II All-American hon-
ors. Phillips was a second team NSCAAAll-
Southeast Region selection last season.
A sophomore from Grand Prairie, Texas,
Klute brought a lot of hype to the Lakers
transferring fromDivision I Furman. He was
previously a U-17 and U-20 U.S. National
Team player and showed that ability on the
field this season.
Klute played every minute of the Lakers’ 18
games at center defender, becoming
arguably the top defender in the Peach Belt.
He recorded an assist which set the game-
winner in the Lakers’ thrilling overtime vic-
tory over Tampa.
A senior from Swindon, England, Phillips
was the Lakers’ third-leading scorer this sea-
son with five goals and six assists for 16
points. His top performance was scoring
twice in a 4-1 victory over Young Harris. He
also recorded two assists in the season-open-
ing 5-0 shutout over Anderson. In addition,
Phillips finished third in the Peach Belt
Conference in assists.
For his career, Phillips finished up as a three-
time All-Peach Belt performer and two-time
All-Southeast Region selection. He also set
the Clayton State all-time assists record with
27.
There’s an old saying, “always a
bridesmaid, never a bride,” that is usu-
ally used to describe someone who
typically comes very close to winning
a competition, but finishes just behind
the winner.
The 2011 race for the Tom Eddins
Virtual Trivia Trophy was certainly a
very close one, but this time, the
bridesmaid won in the end, and on the
very last question. Perhaps an operatic
or Shakespearean reference might be
good here, because the winner of the
10th annual Campus Review trivia
contest is Clayton State Director of
Opera and Vocal Studies Dr. Kurt-
Alexander Zeller. A devoted Trivia
Time player over the years, Zeller had
previously come close to taking the
trophy several times, only to be edged
out by the Lou Bracketts, Rob Taylors
and Kelly Adams of Clayton State.
But not in 2011. By correctly, and
more importantly firstly, answering
what DePoy play featured one of the
main characters appearing in a
snorkel, flippers and facemask
(Ophelia
in
Hamlet:
the
Musical), Zeller
took the 2011
Eddins Trophy
with 39 points,
just besting for-
mer
Clayton
State Psychology
Professor
Dr.
B.D. Stillion by
four points and an hour and 15 minutes.
Stillion, in addition to finishing second
overall, was also second (by 75 minutes)
with the Hamlet: the Musical answer. Had
their answers been reversed, Zeller and
Stillion would have tied for first. For that
matter, if Jill Ellington, who ended up tied
for second with Stillion with 35 points,
had had the first correct answer to Hamlet
(she was third), then she would have taken
“home” the trophy. Or, if Scott Bassett,
fourth overall with 31 points, had come up
with the first correct answer, he might
have won as well. It was that close.
Others in the running behind the top four
included Scott McElroy (26) and Taylor
(21). In all, 23 individuals scored in this
year’s Trivia Time, including
President Dr. Tim Hynes, with 10
points. The following is the entire list
of Trivia Time winners over the 10
years of the competition.

To start off the new year, and an elec-
tion year at that, with another Hamlet
question, what is the name of the ham-
let in New Hampshire that traditional-
ly casts the first vote in the New
Hampshire primary? Send your
answers, not to Herman Cain (he’s
reputedly back flipping pizzas) but to
