Griggs and Woodard Light Up Wingate

With a big milestone at stake, the Clayton
State Laker women’s basketball team
turned to Drameka Griggs and Tanisha
Woodard for the spark.
Griggs had a remarkable game, scoring a
career-high 28 points and adding seven
steals and three assists in just 20 minutes
of play as Clayton State knocked off visit-
ing Wingate 76-60 in the Heritage Bank
Holiday Classic at the Athletics and
Fitness Center. The Lakers tied the Peach
Belt Conference record with their 26th
consecutive home victory.

ond half as she fueled the Lakers on two
key rallies. In fact, of Clayton State’s 16
points in the final five minutes of the
game, Griggs accounted for 12 of them,
and her jump shot at the 14:43 mark
sparked a 17-0 Clayton State run.
However, the Bulldogs answered the chal-
lenge with an 11-2 run as Nikki Burton
and Kurie Washington drilled back-to-
back 3-point baskets. Two free throws by
Washington trimmed the Clayton State
lead to 58-51 with 6:46 remaining, then
Griggs took over with two transition lay-
ups and a jump shot to increase the Laker
lead to 70-56 with 1:52 remaining.
In addition to Griggs, Woodard recorded a
double-double with 12 points and 10
assists, and came close to the first triple-

To the surprise on no one, Clayton State
limited the Bulldogs to only 33 percent
shooting from the field and forced 29
Wingate turnovers.

point basket for the Patriots, but it was off
with 11 seconds remaining. Williams and
Salter each hit two free throws to seal it
for the Lakers.
Williams and Salter paced the Lakers with
21 points each as five Clayton State play-
ers scored in double-figures. Bachanov

and 11 rebounds, while Reco Lewis
scored 13 points and Tony Dukes scored
12 points – both off the bench. Overall,
the Clayton State bench outscored the
Francis Marion bench 33-2. The Lakers
shot 48 percent from the field and 85 per-
cent (22-for-26) from the free throw line.
“The way we played tonight is to play
offensively,” Gibbons says. “We are also
doing better on the glass, and we are tak-
ing it to the basket more and finishing.”

double-figures, led by Gary with 28 points
on 12-for-14 shooting from the free throw
line. Wright scored 21 points, followed by

Smith scored 12 points, and McLendon

percent from 3-point range and 84 percent
from the free throw line.
