THE LAKER CONNECTION
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Success can be measured and achieved in a moment, in a career, or over a lifetime. Dictionary.com includes definitions capturing that range of success, whether as the favorable completion of attempts or endeavors, or the attain- ment of wealth, position, honors, or the like. I, for one, believe that we often measure our days based on successes large and small. More often than not, individuals, groups and organizations alike can point
to illustrations or signs of success, rather than any final claim of that status.
Certainly this volume contains the stories of Clayton
State people who present some extraordinary evi-
dence of success. These stories include local small
businesses advancing their futures with the support of
our Small Business Development Center. Leonard
Moreland, former chair of the Clayton State Univer-
sity Foundation Board, and University System of
Georgia Regents Hall of Fame Friends and Alumni Award recepient, has demonstrated success in his personal and professional life, and has used those successes to support students, faculty and staff at our university. Spivey Hall will celebrate 25 years of successful sharing of classical and jazz music with the citizens of Georgia. Many of our faculty and staff have translated their own professional successes into opportunities for future measures of success for our students.
Geoffrey James in Inc.com poses a series of 10 questions that hopefully frame the daily successes of many of our students, faculty, staff and alumni. Some of those questions help me frame my own days: Have I done some- thing today that improved the world? Have I reviewed and honed my plans for the future? Have I acted in private with the same integrity I exhibit in public? Have I accomplished something worthwhile? Have I collected some wonderful memories? Have I felt grateful for the incredible gift of being alive? Being part of a university named by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for the fourth consecutive year as one of the top 100 workplaces in Atlanta, I am grateful to be able to read and observe the stories of so many who in their daily lives can legitimately lay claim to success now and into the future.
