Former Atlanta Mayor
Shirley Franklin Speaks on Leadership
Former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Clarke
Franklin returned to Clayton State
University last week as a Faculty Scholar
for the School of Nursing (SoN) in
Clayton State’s College of Health.
Franklin, who has previously spoken
twice on the Clayton State campus, most
recently as a Commencement speaker in
December 2011, spoke as part of the
2012/2012 SoN Faculty Scholar program
on “Leadership & Achieving Your
Dreams.”
“This program is about tapping into your
leadership, not mine; tapping into your
passions so that you can step forward and
provide leadership in your field and your
community. The rest of us look at people
who are in the medical field, everyone
from the technicians, the researchers, the
nurses, and the doctors, everyone- we
look at all of you as leaders. We need to
make sure that you see yourselves as lead-
ers. We are looking to you because you
are educated, you are licensed, you are
trained, and we are looking to you to pro-
vide leadership in your field,” expressed
Franklin.
Franklin’s presentation also offered Q&A
with those in attendance. As her second
role in the SoN Faculty Scholar program,
Franklin will also be speaking at Clayton
State in the spring of 2013, at a day and
time to be announced.
Franklin was elected the first African
American woman mayor of a major
southern city in 2002 and served two-
terms until 2009. Upon leaving office, she
was appointed to the William and Camille
Cosby Endowed Chair at Spelman
College and served in this capacity until
June 2011.
