Wi2STEM Thanks
Georgia Power For Continued Support
by Lauren Graves, University Relations
Let’s hear it for the girls. And Georgia
Power. Clayton State University’s
Wi2STEM, an organization that
advances women interested in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math
(STEM) disciplines, thanks Georgia
Power for their continued financial
support.
Through the Metro South Region
Georgia Power Office’s faithful giving,
Wi2STEM has received $10,000 from
the utility company since the Clayton
State student organization was estab-
lished in 2009.
“Clayton State University is very well
respected, and we see the results in its
student’s successes and accomplish-
ments via Wi2STEM and other note-
worthy programs,” says John
D’Andrea, Georgia Power’s Metro
South Region Manager for Butts,
Clayton, Henry, South Fulton, Fayette
and Coweta counties. “Georgia Power
is proud to partner with such an organ-
ization that is involved in the success of
our community.”
Wi2STEM puts Georgia Power’s gen-
erosity to good use, enabling 26 students
thus far to travel to conferences and pres-
ent their research in STEM specific fields.
Travel destinations include the 2010
American Chemical Society (ACS)
National Meeting in San Francisco, the
2010 Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE R3) Region
3 Meeting in Concord, N.C., the 2011
Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) of
the Mathematical Association of America
and American Mathematical Society in
New Orleans; the 2011 American
Chemical Society (ACS) conference in
Anaheim, Cal.; the 2011 Grace Hopper
Celebration of Women in Computing
Conference (GHC11) in Portland, Ore.;
and the 2012 ACS National Meeting in
San Diego. Three more women plan to
travel to the Grace Hopper Celebration of
Women in Computing Conference
(GHC12) in Baltimore this year.
“Georgia Power’s generous investment in
Clayton State’s Wi2STEM women will
have enormous returns over the years,”
says Mary Hudachek-Buswell, Clayton
State’s Wi2STEM faculty representative
and assistant professor of computer sci-
ence and mathematics. “Their donations
help form the students who will shape our
world in the future. Each woman who
attended a STEM related conference said
it was a life changing experience that for-
ever impacted her view of herself and her
place in science, technology, engineering
or mathematics. Thanks to Georgia
Power, they were inspired to continue in
their education, reach for their dreams,
gain more knowledge, and contribute to
their disciplines.”
It’s this pay it forward attitude that drives
the Clayton State – Georgia Power part-
nership. And, to Clayton State Vice
President for External Relations Kate
Troelstra, this cycle makes the gift all the
more powerful.
“Georgia Power’s commitment to edu-
cation will have a tremendous impact
on these students’ lives, and the
women in Clayton State’s Wi2STEM
will continue to pay it forward as their
careers impact others,” Troelstra con-
cludes.
Georgia Power’s Metro South External
Affairs Manager, June Wood agrees,
“Giving back to the communities we
serve is just one way Georgia Power
honors its commitment to be A Citizen
Wherever We Serve. Our vision is
based on a very simple premise: The
quality of life in our communities
directly affects the success of our busi-
ness. As a company, we want to be
remembered not only by the service we
provide, but also for what we do to
improve the quality of life for all peo-
ple in the places where we live and
work.”
