National CBS TV Game Highlights
2012/13 Clayton State Men’s Basketball Schedule
by Gid Rowell, Athletics
The Clayton State men’s basketball pro-
gram has announced its schedule for the
2012/13 season, and for the first time,
fans all across the country will have the
opportunity to see head coach Gordon
Gibbons’ Lakers live in action.
The highlight of this year’s schedule is a
Saturday, Feb. 16 matchup with the
Montevallo Falcons, which will be the
national NCAA Division II Game of the
Week and be televised across the country
live on the CBS College Sports network.
The nationally-televised game will be the
first for the Laker men’s program. Tip-off
for the contest in Montevallo, Ala., is set
for 11 a.m., CDT.
“This national game is great exposure for
our University, and our program,” says
Gibbons, entering his 11th season at
Clayton State. “We are excited CBS
selected Clayton State.”
Montevallo is the NCAA Division II run-
ner-up from the 2011/12 season and
Clayton State gave its Peach Belt West
rival Falcons all they could handle last
year before falling 77-74 in overtime at
the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Along with the nationally televised game,
other highlights of the 2012/13 season
include 16 home games, the continuance
of an in-state rivalry and the renewal of
play against a metro-Atlanta foe in the
non-conference schedule. The Lakers also
have 13 games – home and away – against
teams that advanced to last season’s
NCAA Division II National Tournament,
including two games against the NCAA
Division II national runner-up.
It all starts on Tuesday, Nov. 14, when
Clayton State plays host to Tennessee
Temple at the Athletics and Fitness
Center.
“Our schedule is one of the toughest in
school history and includes 19 league
games,” says Gibbons. “It will be chal-
lenging.”
One of the highlights of the non-confer-
ence schedule will be Clayton State’s
home-and-home matchup with rival West
Georgia. The first game will be at the
Athletics & Fitness Center on Nov. 20,
while the return game will be in
Carrollton at the Coliseum on Dec. 11.
The Lakers and Wolves split games last
year and Clayton State has won six of the
last eight games against West Georgia.
Clayton State will also renew a rivalry
against cross-town foe Clark-Atlanta,
playing the Panthers for the first time
since 2009. The Lakers will host Clark-
Atlanta, from the SIAC, on Saturday, Dec.

Laker Women’s Cross Country Wins
Peach Belt Conference Championships
After finishing second four times in the
program's 17-year history of running in
the Peach Belt Conference meet, the 2012
Clayton State women's cross country team
was able to achieve a feat that no other
Laker women's cross country team has
ever managed.
The Lakers won their first Peach Belt
Conference Championship in women's
cross country Saturday at the meet held on
the campus of the University of
Montevallo in Alabama. Clayton State has
now won a Peach Belt Conference
Championship in every sport in the
league.
"We finally won a Peach Belt Conference
title and it sure feels great," says head
coach Mike Mead. "These ladies worked
hard this summer and this season to earn
the program its first conference title. It
was touch and go mid-race, but it came
together in the last 1K where it mattered.
We set a team record with our Top five
averaging 23:27 per runner for 6K."
The Lakers finished with a meet low 63
points ahead of rival Columbus State, who
finished second with 70 points. UNC
Pembroke placed third with 103 points,
followed by Montevallo in fourth with
113 points and Georgia College rounding
out the top five with 148 points.
“Our top three of Racquel Valadez,
Samantha Walling, and Paige Galvin fin-
ished in the top seven for first team All-
PBC honors," says Mead. "Jessica Smith
and Maia Kuhnen locked it up by placing
in the Top 25, while Taylor Galvin and
Gisele Javois were right there with
Kuhnen at the finish for top 30 finishes."
Along with Valadez, Walling and Galvin
being named All-Conference, Mead was
