DREAMS. MADE REAL.
Clayton State Announces
Plans to Start Athletic Hall of Fame
by Gid Rowell, Athletics
Clayton State recently kicked off 2013/14
athletic season, and it will be an extra spe-
cial one in the history of Laker Athletics
program, as it enters its 24th year of com-
petition.
Athletic Director Carl McAloose has
announced that Clayton State will start an
Athletic Hall of Fame during the upcom-
ing season with the first class of inductees
planned for enshrinement in February of
2014.
“After speaking with many people associ-
ated with our program, we feel like it is
time to start a Clayton State Athletics Hall
of Fame,” says McAloose. “We’ve had
hundreds of student-athletes along with
many coaches, administrators and com-
munity members who have excelled at the
highest levels, and we look forward to
recognizing their achievements with such
a lasting honor.”
Nominations for Hall of Fame inductees
will be open to the public via the Clayton
State Athletics website. Along with an
online nomination, the site also includes
the criteria for nomination and the selec-
tion process.
From the nominations, a Hall of Fame
committee consisting of 12 members will
select the inductees. The committee con-
sists of athletic department administra-
tors/coaches, university faculty/ staff and
community members.
Clayton State University for Parents and Students
Creating a College-Bound Culture
by John Shiffert, University Relations
“We’re creating a college-bound culture
in Clayton County.” -- Dr. Lila Roberts,
dean of the College of Information and
Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) at
Clayton State University, commenting on
the “big picture” goal of the partnership
between the University and Rex Mill
Middle School.
Students and their parents from Clayton
County’s Rex Mill Middle School visited
Clayton State Saturday, Oct. 5 for the
Second Annual Clayton State University
for Parents and Students, an outreach plan
of the University designed to foster a
“college bound” culture among the mid-
dle schoolers and their parents. Hosting
and welcoming the middle school stu-
dents and parents were Clayton State
President Dr. Thomas Hynes, Dean
Roberts, and CIMS Assistant Dean Jarrett
Terry. The students were also accompa-
nied by their principal, Camille Murner,
and several Rex Mill teachers, including
Clayton State alumnus and seventh grade
social studies teacher Cindi LeMon.
In terms of experiential learning, the day’s
program generated benefits for both the
Clayton State students who volunteered
their time on a Saturday to take part, and
the Rex Mill students and parents.
“When you see children getting into (the
college experience) this early, it’s good
knowing you’re giving them that expo-
sure,” says Rotimi Olotu, a sophomore
computer science major from Stone
Mountain and an expert in computer gam-
ing. “It’s joy to help them learn.”
Olotu also points out that he learned some
things himself.
“I did some researching about what’s hap-
pening in the gaming development
world,” he said of his preparation for
helping direct one of the student sessions
