              In a Peach Belt Conference match pitting
            
            
              two Top 10 teams in Division II, the
            
            
              Clayton State women’s tennis team
            
            
              dropped a 7-2 decision against visiting in-
            
            
              state rival Columbus State on Wednesday
            
            
              at Laker Courts. The defeat drops the
            
            
              Lakers, ranked ninth in Division II, to 4-6
            
            
              overall and 3-2 in the Peach Belt.
            
            
              Columbus State, meanwhile, remains
            
            
              undefeated on the season at 16-0 overall
            
            
              and 6-0 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State
            
            
              won one match each in singles and in dou-
            
            
              bles. In singles, freshman Hannah Keeling
            
            
              knocked off Columbus State’s Milica
            
            
              Tomic 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Keeling and sen-
            
            
              ior Marie Cercelletti won the Lakers’ lone
            
            
              double match with a 9-7 victory at No. 2
            
            
              over Tomic and Olivera Jokic from
            
            
              Columbus State.

              The Clayton State Laker men’s golf team
            
            
              finished 16th overall in a talented 17-team
            
            
              field at Bobcat Intercollegiate tourna-
            
            
              ment. The Lakers fired a final-round score
            
            
              of 302 and finished with a three-round
            
            
              total of 901. This was a field loaded with
            
            
              Division II powers as 12 of the 17 teams
            
            
              are currently nationally-ranked. That also
            
            
              includes five of the Top 10. Individually
            
            
              for Clayton State, junior Chris McManus
            
            
              finished tied for 67th overall with a 225
            
            
              (73-73-79). Behind McManus and tied for
            
            
              70th was senior Clark Nelson (82-73-72)
            
            
              and freshman Will Shenstone (69-82-76)
            
            
              both with a 227. Rounding out the Laker
            
            
              scoring was sophomore Tyson Beaupre
            
            
              tied for 79th with a 231 (76-80-75) and
            
            
              freshman Ryan Haskell in 87th with a 235
            
            
              (79-76-80).

              The Clayton State men’s team set two
            
            
              team records at Emory University, back-
            
            
              to-back on Friday night and less than an
            
            
              hour apart -- first the 4 x 800m relay and
            
            
              then by Russell Lawless in the steeple-
            
            
              chase.  The 4 x 800 record had stood for
            
            
              eight years while the steeplechase record
            
            
              stood for three years.  This was only
            
            
              Lawless’ second career run in the steeple-
            
            
              chase. Kayla “KMob” Mobley picked up
            
            
              the only Clayton State win during the
            
            
              weekend in the shot put.  Maia Kuhnen
            
            
              ran the fastest 800m run in eight years for
            
            
              the women’s highest finish in a running
            
            
              event.  Ayrton Azcue also ran a personal-
            
            
              best in the 1500m for the men’s highest
            
            
              individual finish.

              The Clayton State University Spirit
            
            
              Program will hold its spring 2012 clinic
            
            
              and cheerleader tryouts for Clayton State
            
            
              students on Apr. 9 through Apr. 11 from
            
            
              5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Student

              gymnasium.
            
            
              Participants must be present at each of the
            
            
              three nights to be eligible to try out.

                Smith Awards
              
            
            
              Clayton State University will gather on
            
            
              Tuesday, Apr. 24, in Spivey Hall to honor
            
            
              faculty and staff with the University’s
            
            
              annual Service Awards ceremony. This
            
            
              year will also celebrate the 17th annual
            
            
              announcement of the Alice J. Smith award
            
            
              winners. The event will begin at 2 p.m.,
            
            
              followed with a light reception. The
            
            
              Service Awards Ceremony is a time for
            
            
              Clayton State to celebrate and honor fac-
            
            
              ulty and staff through recognizing years
            
            
              of service, tenure, promotions, and retire-
            
            
              ment. The University’s 2012 Alice J.
            
            
              Smith Awards will be presented at the cer-
            
            
              emony. An annual honor since 1995, the
            
            
              Smith Awards are presented to the faculty
            
            
              member and staff member deemed most
            
            
              outstanding as determined by committees
            
            
              of their peers. The award was established
            
            
              by local philanthropist Joseph Smith as a
            
            
              memorial to his wife, Alice, to honor her
            
            
              career in teaching and her love for learn-
