Trivia Time
Was He Really Rob’s
Great Grand Uncle?
by John Shiffert, University Relations
Emeritus Director of Campus Life
Rob Taylor claims that Zachary
Taylor is his great grand uncle.
That may or may not be true, but
what is true is that Z. Taylor was
elected president in 1848, having
never voted for president prior to his
election. Old Rough and Ready had
apparently been too busy fighting in
the Mexican War along with his vari-
ous other military assignments, to get
to the polling place. That didn’t stop
the Whig Party, which had a fondness
for war heroes, from nominating the
old soldier for the top office.
While Old Rough and Ready’s great
grand nephew had the first correct
answer (and a Bonus Point for being
a relative), Jill Ellington also came up
with the correct answer.
If you know your American history,
you know that Z. Taylor was in the
middle of one of the great pre-Civil
War dramas; the Compromise of
1850. Well, he was in the middle until
he died a timely death, which basical-
ly allowed the compromise, which
pretty much kept the Civil War from
breaking out 11 years before it did, to
be passed.
Taylor’s role in the compromise was
sort of incidental. However, three
great figures of the U.S. Senate were
very much behind the passage of the
historic act. Who were they? Send
your answers, not to John C. Calhoun
(who
was
against
the
compromise anyway), but to

With the start of the 2012-13 women’s
basketball season just around the corner,
Clayton State senior guard Drameka
Griggs has received some preseason acco-
lades based on her fine play over the last
two years.
Griggs was one of five players to be
named to the Peach Belt Conference
Preseason All-Conference Team selected
by the league’s head coaches. Along with
Griggs, North Georgia’s Jaymee Carnes,
USC Aiken’s Kayla Harris, Armstrong’s
Mauri Wells and Georgia College’s
Shanteona Keys were also named to the
preseason squad.
“MeMe (Drameka) is very deserving of
this honor, and we are thrilled for her,”
says head coach Dennis Cox. “She has
been a huge part of our success over the
last two seasons, and we are expecting big
things from her again this year, as she
embarks upon her senior season.
Congratulations to her, as well as to the
other four players named.”
Griggs was Clayton State’s second lead-
ing scorer last year, averaging 11 points
per game. During the last two seasons, she
has been an integral part of a Clayton
State team that has a 64-5 record, winning
a Peach Belt Conference championship in
the 2011-12 season and a National
Championship in 2010-11.
The Clayton State men’s soccer season
recently came to a close, and sophomore
forward Ado Junuzovic is receiving some
postseason accolades for his fine play dur-
ing the 2012 campaign.
Junuzovic, Clayton State’s leading scorer
in his first season with the Lakers, was
named to the 2012 Peach Belt All-
Conference team.
“Ado (Junuzovic) was a great addition to
our ranks this year,” says head Clayton
State coach Pete Peterson. “He led the
PBC with shots taken and was second in
the regular season with goals in the PBC.”
Junuzovic finished the season with 11
goals and three assists to lead the Laker
offensive attack in 2012. He opened the
season with a “hat trick” against Pfeiffer
and finished the season with three multi-
goal games. The aggressive, play-making
forward from Lawrenceville also finished
with a team high 77 shots on the season.
“I have watched him since he was in mid-
dle school and glad he came with us,” said
Petersen. “His youth coach, Nuno
Petiera, an old friend, trained him well
and we inherited a striker with some great
instincts and habits. Look for some great
goals from him in the years to come.”
In the latest NCAA Division II soccer sta-
tistics, Junuzovic ranks 17th in the nation
in goals per game and 24th in points per
contest.
