Clayton Community Big Band Presents “Hooked on Basie”

Spivey Hall Celebrates the
Holidays with Young People’s Concerts
Clayton State University’s world-famous
Spivey Hall will be celebrating the 2012
holiday season with five special daytime
Young People’s Concerts; starting on
Monday, Nov. 19 and concluding on
Wednesday, Dec. 12. All five concerts
start at 11:15 a.m., in Spivey Hall on the
Clayton State campus in Morrow.
Spivey Hall’s daytime Young People’s
Concerts are an excellent opportunity for
dreams to be made real, and for only $2
per person. Reservations can be made by
calling (678) 466-4481.
The holidays started on Monday, Nov. 19,
with “AGrand Mercer Christmas,” featur-
ing the Mercer Singers and the Robert
McDuffie Center for Strings Orchestra.
The Mercer University Townsend School
of Music rings in the holiday season with
“A Grand Mercer Christmas.” Audiences
will be delighted with familiar carols and
holiday tunes both traditional and contem-
porary accompanied by string orchestra!
The week after Thanksgiving, Thursday,
Nov. 29 and Friday, Nov. 30, the
Birmingham Children's Theatre presents,
“The Gingerbread Boy.” In addition to the
11:15 a.m. performances both days, there
will also be 9:30 a.m. presentations both
days. Specially designed for children in
Kindergarten through fifth grades, “The
Gingerbread Boy” is a fun-filled tale that
teaches morals of respect, friendship, and
listening well.
On Monday, Dec. 3, the Capitol City
Opera Company Madrigal Singers will
perform on the Spivey Hall stage. The
Capitol City Opera Company is a cham-
ber vocal ensemble that specializes in
sacred and secular music from the
Renaissance to the present. The group will
present a varied program of madrigals and
traditional holiday carols in beautiful
Renaissance period costumes.

The Clayton State University Department
of Visual and Performing Arts presents
the Clayton Community Big Band
(CCBB) in “Hooked On Basie” in Spivey
Hall on Monday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public.
“Hooked on Basie” will include popular
charts from all decades of Basie's career,
including writers Neal Hefti, Quincy
Jones, Sammy Nestico, and Bill Holman.
"This is actually the fourth program of
100 percent Count Basie music that the
CCBB has held in our twelve years of
existence,” says founding and current
director Stacey Houghton. “I am surely
hooked on Basie, the band can't get
enough Basie, and our audiences always
enjoy and request Basie; this concert can-
not lose! It has been five years since the
last all-Basie show, so we are due for
another."
Performing in “Hooked on Basie” are the
following talented musicians: Stacey

Park), Blake Anderson (McDonough),
