Clayton State to Face Columbus State
In NCAA Tournament First Round
by Gid Rowell
By winning the Peach Belt Conference
Tournament Championship on Sunday,
the Clayton State women’s soccer team
received an automatic bid to the 2013
NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer
National Championships, and on Monday
evening, the Lakers learned who they will
face.
Clayton State (12-3-6) will be the fifth
seed out of the Southeast Region and face
fourth seed Columbus State (14-6-0) in
the first round of the Regional. The match
will be played on Friday, Nov. 15, at 1
p.m. on the campus of Wingate University
in Wingate, N.C.
“We are excited to travel to Wingate this
weekend,” says head coach Gareth
O’Sullivan. “We wanted to avoid a PBC
team, but our game against Columbus
State should be a cracker.”
Wingate, out of the South Atlantic
Conference, is the Region’s top seed and
will receive a bye in the first round. The
winner of Friday’s match will face the
Bulldogs (15-2-3) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The other side of the six-team Southeast
Regional bracket will feature second seed
Lenoir-Rhyne (14-4-1), third seed
Belmont Abbey (14-3-3) and sixth seed
Pfeiffer (13-6-1). Lenior-Rhyne will host
this side of the Southeast Regional brack-
et and play the winner of Belmont Abbey
and Pfeiffer. The first and second round
matches at Lenoir-Rhyne are also on
Friday and Sunday.
The Lakers secured a bid to the 2013
NCAA
Division
II
National
Championships by capturing the PBC
Tournament Championship in thrilling
fashion Sunday. The Lakers defeated
Georgia College 4-2 on penalty kicks to
capture the program’s second PBC
Conference Tournament Championship.
The appearance in the NCAA Division II
Women’s Soccer National Championships
will be the program’s third appearance at
nationals. The team also advanced in 2004
and 2005, falling each year in the first
round of the event to Carson-Newman.
Clayton State, ranked #11 in the nation,
defeated Columbus State 3-0 earlier this
year in PBC regular season play. The
Lakers will enter Friday’s match with a
16-game unbeaten streak.
Robinson Selected Peach Belt Player of the Year;
O’Sullivan Named PBC Coach of the Year
It has been a record-setting season for the
Peach Belt Conference champion Clayton
State women’s soccer team, and the pro-
gram received a number of post-season
accolades last week at the Peach Belt
Conference Tournament banquet in
Evans, Ga.
The Lakers had a whopping seven players
receive All-Conference honors, including
senior midfielder Alicia Robinson being
named the 2013 Peach Belt Conference
Player of the Year. In addition, third-year
head coach Gareth O’Sullivan was named
the Peach Belt Coach of Year after leading
the program to the regular season champi-
onship.
“I am delighted for all the girls to be rec-
ognized,” says O’Sullivan. “This was
truly a team effort and to get the Coach of
Year award alongside men’s coach Mark
McKeever from Young Harris is surreal. I
coached Mark while I was at Christian
Brothers. I’m getting old!”
A senior from Telford, England, Robinson
helped lead the Laker program to the
number one seed in the 2013 Peach Belt
Conference Women’s Tournament. She
led the Peach Belt and is ranked sixth
nationally with 10 assists on the year and
added a pair of goals.
A captain for the Lakers, Robinson con-
trolled the midfield for the squad and not
only linked up the offense, but she also
helped the Laker defense to a 0.98 goals
against average, holding opponents to 20
goals in 19 games played.
Robinson becomes the first Laker to be
named the PBC Player of the Year since
Cherie Sayon was a co-Player of the Year
in 2010. She is the fifth Clayton State
player to receive the honor. In her first
season at Clayton State in 2011, Robinson
garnered both All-Southeast Region and
All-PBC honors.
Taking over the program three years ago,
O'Sullivan has brought Clayton State back
Robinson, cont’d., p. 20
