Clayton State Music Preparatory School
by Ciji Fox, University Relations
Spivey Hall Young People’s Concert Season Opens October 10
Dr. Alexander Wasserman recently joined
the Music Preparatory School in the
Department of Visual and Performing
Arts in the College of Arts & Sciences at
Clayton
State
University.
The
University’s Music Prep school has a fac-
ulty of professional musicians and offers
affordable lessons and classes to the pub-
lic in piano, violin, voice, brass, and other
instruments. Each session lasts for nine
weeks and adults, children over the age of
six, and all skill levels are welcome.
Dedicated to the education of emerging
talent, Wasserman has previously served
as professor of Piano at Youngstown State
University. Additionally, he has held fac-
ulty positions at the International School
of Music and Vance Music Studios. He
has given master classes at University of
St. Thomas (Minn.), Westmont College
(Cal.), Cleveland Music School
Settlement and Youngstown State.
Currently, Wasserman maintains a private
piano studio in Atlanta.
Wasserman is enthusiastic about teaching
at Clayton State University.
“The first thing that I noticed about the
Clayton State University music department
was just how beautiful the facilities are,”
Wasserman says. “Of course, Spivey Hall is
well-known as one of the finest recital halls in
the country, but the actual music building is
just fantastic! When I arrive to teach, I am
always so happy to see the wonderful commu-
nity of students that congregate in the building.
It seems to me like a true `family’ and I firmly
believe that any strong department at a univer-
sity must feel like a family unit.”
Wasserman is pleased with the quality of
students at the University.
“It’s great to know that the University
provides excellent non-college level
instruction at very reasonable prices,” he
says. “All of my students are extremely
hard-working and personable. In fact, in
the short time that I have been teaching
them, I feel that we have established a
wonderful rapport; I'm always excited for
our weekly private lessons to see their
improvement.”
Wasserman is looking forward to expand-
ing his private studio, as well as beginning
classroom teaching.
“There aren't very many programs like
Clayton State University’s in the Atlanta
metro area, so I feel that there is a great
possibility for substantial growth,” he
notes. “I hope to become more involved in
any capacity with the prep school and
with the college. I'm quite proud to be part
of a program which is sure to continue to
grow in the coming years.”
Registration for Fall Session II pf the
Music Preparatory School is now open,
with lessons beginning the week of Oct.
15. Prep School students are taught in the
Clayton State Music Education Building
and have the opportunity to perform on
campus in Spivey Hall.
