Laker Women Win Fourth Straight
by Gid Rowell, Athletics
With two unanswered second half goals,
the Clayton State women’s soccer team
won their fourth straight game Saturday,
defeating Georgia College 2-1 in Peach
Belt Conference play.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Lakers got two
quick goals in the first 15 minutes of the
second half en route to the road conference
win. Laker defender Silvia Espelt knotted
the score at one apiece seven minutes into
the half, converting a penalty kick.
Clayton State forward Natalia Valentine
performed her offensive magic once again
to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead taking a pass
from midfielder Becky Brown. She then
beat the Georgia College goalkeeper for
her team-leading eighth goal of the sea-
son.
Georgia College's Ashley Veilleux gave
the Bobcats the first half lead with a goal
off a pass from Abby Dalton 20 minutes
into the match.
With the win, Clayton State improves to
7-3 overall and 3-1 in the Peach Belt
Conference. The Lakers will put their
three-game PBC winning streak on the
line Wednesday hosting Armstrong State,
ranked ninth in the latest national poll.
Clayton State outshot the Bobcats 18-11
and its defense flexed its muscles, allow-
ing only two shots on goal for the entire
match. Keepers Charlotte McCormack
and Laoise O’Driscoll split time in the
first and second half in the victory.
Barton has served as Clayton State’s
director of financial aid for four-and-half
years. She is responsible for all aspects of
interpretation and implementation of fed-
eral and state guidelines for awarding of
financial aid for the University, a task
requires long hours and numerous
resources, especially at Clayton State,
where 62 percent of the students receive
the Pell Grant, and a total of 79 percent of
the students receive some form of need-
based federal financial aid.
All Financial Aid offices experience an
exceptionally high volume of student con-
tacts via phone, email, and in person.
Volume is heaviest during the summer
months as students complete the financial
aid process for the new academic year.
Barton has strategically reorganized the
office and has significantly improved cus-
tomer service to students this past year.
The HUB team that shares in the nomina-
tion includes: Shannon Thomas, director,

port; John Wallom, assistant director of
virtual services, Steve Wagner, assistant
director of the service counter; Sherry
Paul, assistant director of campus support;
Chris Baldwin, client communication
manager; and Sundiata Kita-Bradshaw,
client support manager.
The HUB is the technical support for the
campus, including satellite locations. The
HUB is comprised of 35 student workers,
six full-time staff, and one director under
the division of the Office of Information
Technology and Services (OITS).
