Trivia Time
The Winning Team
by John Shiffert, University Relations
Grover Cleveland Alexander, in
addition to being named after presi-
dent Grover Cleveland (the subject
of the last Trivia Time question), was
a tremendous major league pitcher,
with 373 wins.
What wasn’t so tremendous was the
film biopic about Alexander. “The
Winning Team” was anything but a
winner, both artistically and histori-
cally, and it’s generally considered
one of the worst baseball movies of
all-time (Quite an accomplishment,
there have been a raft of bad baseball
pix.) And yes, in keeping with the
recent presidential theme of Trivia
Time, “Alex” was played by none
other than Ronald Reagan in this
classic stinker. It may not have been
“Bedtime for Bonzo” bad, but it was
close.
Coming up with the correct answer
were film and/or trivia buffs Kathy
Garrison, Norman Grizzell, Jill
Ellington, Bobby Hamil, Dotty
Bumbalough, Scott McElroy, Rob
Taylor, David Ludley and B.D.
Stillion… some of whom actually
admitted to having seen this turkey.
(However, points will NOT be
deducted for this admission.)
Having beaten the presidential theme
into submission for now (and reserv-
ing the right to return to same as
November draws nearer), Trivia
Time presents the first-ever Trivia
Time-themed question? Who was the
very first Trivia Time champion?
At the (roughly) halfway point of the
Trivia Time year, the race for the
2012 Tom Eddins Virtual Trivia
Trophy looks like a three-way con-
test. Ellington leads with 30 points,
followed by Taylor and Stillion, both
with 22 points. The only other play-
ers in double figures are Garrison
(14), McElroy (10) and Brett
Reichert (10).
Dental Hygiene graduates had something to smile about when they received their pins in a cere-
mony held in Spivey Hall.
