Spivey Hall Announces Major Teaching Training Workshops
Ann Cramer, director for IBM Corporate
Citizenship & Corporate Affairs for the
Americas, and a commencement speaker
at Clayton State’s May 2011 ceremony,
has invited Clayton State faculty, staff and
students to participate in the upcoming
Day of Action on Thursday, June 21. This
is a national strategic effort on the longest
day of the year to advance the common
good. More than 74,000 individuals par-
ticipated nationwide last year.
Cramer, a past chair of the United Way
Board of Directors, notes that, to celebrate
United Way's 125th anniversary in 2012,
there have been created 125 volunteer
opportunities in conjunction with the Day
of Action. The activities range from a
scheduled project at a local nonprofit, to
something on your own for a neighbor or
an activity at the office with your co-
workers. A few of the options include:
• Create a home away from home by
donating bedding for children receiv-
ing treatment
• Help your local library prepare for
reading programs
• Paint line games in children's centers
• Host a clothing drive at work &
donate items to a local nonprofit

and register, please go to; http://united-
wayatlanta.org/dayofaction/.
Any Clayton State individuals or organi-
zations planning to take part in the Day of
Action should also contact the Office of
University Relations, so that University
Relations can maintain a record of the
University’s participation in this event.
Clayton State University’s world-famous
Spivey Hall will once again be making a
significant contribution to music educa-
tion with its annual Kodály Teacher
Training Workshops, to be held Monday,
July 16 to Friday, July 20, in Spivey Hall.
The two workshops, one offering an intro-
duction to Kodály, and the other a Kodály
refresher, will be taught by one of
America's leading Kodály experts and a
top clinician in the field -- Dr. Jill Trinka.
The workshops are designed for music
teachers and college students who are
interested in teaching music students (and
college students get a discount).
The Kodály Concept is a comprehensive,
sequential program that integrates the best
ideas, techniques, and approaches to
music education universally proven to be
successful. The program builds musician-
ship through the singing of folk songs,
classical music, and other quality materi-
als.
The cost for the “Intro to Kodály” work-
shop, which will run from July 16 to July 18,
is $180 ($50 for currently enrolled college
students). Workshop participants will learn
the basics of Kodály-based music curricu-
lum essentials for grades K-5, gaining valu-
able tools and techniques that can be put to
use in the classroom. The workshop includes
a wide range of music repertoire, engaging
instructional activities, and excellent
sequencing that will stimulate planning for
the 2012/2013 school year.
The “Kodály Refresher” workshop, which
will run from July 18 to July 20, is $180,
and $50 for currently enrolled college stu-
dents. Individuals already familiar with
Kodály, can take this refresher course
which will explore pedagogy and process
in depth. Attendees will also learn to write
meaningful lesson plans, create smooth
transitions, and expand their knowledge
of literature. The workshop is designed to
re-inspire and teachers ready to start the
new school year prepared and refreshed.
Interested individuals can register for both
courses for only $350, with currently
enrolled college students getting both
workshops at a real deal – just $75.
