Trivia Time
It’s a Tie!
by John Shiffert
For the third time in the 13-year
Trivia Time history, the race for the
Tom Eddins Virtual Trivia Trophy has
ended in a tie.
While this may seem to be a statistical
unlikelihood, what’s even more
unlikely is that, dating back to the
very first Trivia Time in 2001, Lou
Brackett has been involved in all
three dead heats. We’re not sure what
this says about CID’s history major
and trivia expert, except that Brackett
is clearly an enduring and expert triv-
ia champion – 2013 marks the fifth
time she has finished first.
Of Brackett’s five titles, the 2002 and
2010 wins were shared, respectively,
with former Alumni Association
President Terry Penn, and two-time
(2005, 2010) trivia champion and
Emeritus Director of Student Life
Rob Taylor. Bracket also won the
very first Trivia Time in 2001, and
repeated solely in 2009.
Joining Brackett with 38 points as co-
holder of the 2013 Eddins Trophy is
the 2011 winner, Coordinator of the
Division of Music Dr. Kurt-
Alexander Zeller. Undaunted by
Brackett’s huge lead midway through
2013, Zeller racked up 30 points in
the last five Trivia Times of 2013,
providing witty comments on a vari-
ety of subjects (none of which
involved music, it might be added)
ranging from Rasputin to Jean-Paul
Marat to the Marquis de Sade to Abby
Normal to Mel Brooks. If that range
of expertise doesn’t merit a trophy,
nothing does.
Also providing strong showings in the
2013 campaign were third place fin-
isher and 2012 champion Jill
Ellington (32 points), the ubiquitous
Taylor (29), and another retiree, Dr.
David Ludley (27 points – including a
record 13 for the Marat/Sade ques-
tion).
The entire list of Trivia Time win-
ners... it’s worth noting that while
Brackett has five titles, no fewer than
three others; Eddins, Taylor and
Zeller, now have two each.
2001 – Lou Brackett
2002 – Lou Brackett and Terry Penn
2003 – Tom Eddins
2004 – Jean Myers
2005 – Rob Taylor
2006 – Tom Eddins
2007 – Dina Swearngin
2008 – Kelly Adams
2009 – Lou Brackett
2010 – Lou Brackett and Rob Taylor
2011 – Kurt-Alexander Zeller
2012 – Jill Ellington
2013 – Lou Brackett and Kurt-
Alexander Zeller
To conclude 2013, the question was
asked about the absolutely hilarious
Brooks’ character he created with
Carl Reiner, many years before
“Young Frankenstein.” It wasn’t pro-
nounced FRAN-ken-steen, but the
2000 Year Old Man. The correct
answers came from Ellington, Vickie
Smith, Zeller (giving him just enough
points to tie Brackett) and Taylor.
To start off 2014, we’ll circle back to
Frankenstein mode. In real life, the
body of what U.S. politician, and
presidential relative, actually was
stolen for use in medical experi-
ments?
Kemboi won the 800m with a time of
2:04.01 and the mile run with a time of
4:36.65. Waldron dashed to a first place
finish in the 200m with a time of 23.54,
while Salis placed first in the 400m with a
time of 53.65. The 4x400m relay team of
senior Charles Anderson, sophomore
Geovonne Mortimer-Green, Salis and
Waldron won with a time of 3:33.59.
Salis and Anderson also had runner-up
finishes at the meet. Salis placed second
in the 800m run at 2:05.85, while
Anderson was second in the mile run at
4:41.54.
The Clayton State teams will return to
action on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the UCS
Invitational hosted by Wake Forest. The
meet will be held at the JDL Fast Track in
Winston-Salem, N.C.
holding the Clayton State’s highest GPA
among all female student-athletes.
