Michael Deis Named
Interim Dean for College of Business
He wants students to
succeed and to have
an enriched, person-
alized, educational
experience.
Dr.
Michael H. Deis, long
time faculty member
in the College of
Business at Clayton
State University, is
serving as interim
dean of the College of Business, begin-
ning Jan. 1, 2013.
As part of the University’s concept of
dreams made real, Deis recently stated
how proud he is to be able to work with an
outstanding community of students, facul-
ty, staff, and alumni. He is confident that
the College of Business will, “continue to
assist students in becoming productive
members of society, developing their
intellectual curiosities, expanding their
capacity for critical and reflective think-
ing, and developing an awareness of the
needs of a global economy. The College
of Business mission will include provid-
ing a student-centered environment,
enriched by experience-based learning,
active community service, and the use of
technology to enhance student learning.”
Although Deis will now be serving in an
administrative role, he feels that he will
always be a teacher. He has taught at the
middle school, high school, and college
levels (16 years as a faculty member at
Clayton State ), and in 2006 was chosen
from the regional and state universities’
faculty to receive the University System
of Georgia’s 2005/06 Excellence in
Teaching Award. He also received the
College of Business’ Professor of the Year
Awards for 2002, 2005, and 2010, and
University’s 2003 Alice Smith Award for
the Faculty Member of the Year. He was
also the first director of the College of
Business’ highly successful MBA pro-
gram.
Deis, holds a B.S. degree in Industrial
Management from the University of
Cincinnati, an M.B.A. from the
University of Dayton, and an Ed.D. from
Nova Southeastern University. He is a
professor of Management and will contin-
ue to teach some classes, primarily
Strategic
Management
and
Performance/Quality Management.
Deis says he is sincerely interested in each
student and that he always had an open
door policy.
“I want to bring out the best in all stu-
dents. I want them to have fun, be moti-
vated, and strive to succeed,” he says. “I
Clayton State University Vice
President for Business and Operation
Corlis Cummings has announced that
new names have been chosen for the
two buildings on the Clayton State –
East campus.
Previously known as the Main
Building and the Multipurpose
Building, the new names chosen for the
two facilities are, respectively, Arbor
Hall and Woodlands Hall.
The Clayton State – East Naming
Committee was initially charged with
deciding on new names for the build-
ings and was comprised of a cross-sec-
tion of the Clayton State campus com-
munity.
“The committee primarily considered
names that showed a link between the
two buildings and paid homage to the
beautiful Clayton State campus,” notes
Cummings.

During the deliberation process, mem-
bers had to comply with Clayton State
University Naming Guidelines as well
as University System of Georgia Board
of Regents policies regarding naming
facilities. The Committee solicited
input and comments from occupants in
both buildings as well as from the
Clayton State campus community,
eventually providing recommendations
to Cummings. The building names,
which still require approval by the
Board of Regents of the University
System of Georgia, were then selected
by the President’s Cabinet.
“This was truly a team effort and one of
the most enjoyable projects in which I
have participated,” says Naming
Committee Co-Chair Dolores Cox, the
University’s director of Marketing and
Communications. “I believe the outcomes
reflect the University community’s con-
tinuing appreciation for and stewardship
of our natural environment.”
“I’m so glad to have had the opportunity
to collaborate with this incredible com-
mittee. We had a lot of interesting discus-
sions that took into consideration all of
the proposed names,” says Kelly Adams,
co-chair of the Naming Committee.
The committee members included;
Kelly Adams, Business & Operations
Harun Biswas, Facilities Management
Dr. Jim Braun, Natural Sciences faculty
Dolores Cox, Image & Communications
