2012 MLK Day of Service:
“A Day on, Not a Day Off”
In honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
holiday, the Clayton State University
Department of Campus Life will be offer-
ing Clayton State students the opportunity
to serve their neighbors and communities
by participating in the Day of Service and
the annual MLK Rally & March on
Monday, Jan. 16. This year, Clayton State
will be servicing two sites sponsored by
Hands on Atlanta: The Arts Exchange and
The Grant Park Conservancy.
The Arts Exchange is a vibrant multicul-
tural, multidisciplinary, and intergenera-
tional cultural center committed to artists
as agents for positive social change. It is a
unique venue for professional practicing
artists to share innovative arts experiences
and educational opportunities with the
community. Service volunteers will paint
various rooms and the theater as well as
general cleaning of the building. There are
25 spaces for students available.
The Grant Park Conservancy is the oldest
city park in Atlanta. Established in 1889
and originally known as the Grant Park
Zoo; the park serves more than two mil-
lion visitors per year. Service volunteers
will assist with beautifying and restoring
the park by clearing overgrowth, picking
up trash, mulching, and raking leaves.
There are also 25 spaces available for this
activity.
Upon completion of the service projects,
students will then participate in the
Annual MLK Rally & March at noon,
beginning at Peachtree and Baker streets
in downtown Atlanta.
Transportation will be provided for 50
students and will depart the Clayton State
Student Activities Center (SAC) at 7 a.m.,
with an expected return (after the Rally &
March) at 3 p.m. Snacks and water will
be provided, but students must provide
their own meals.
Interested Clayton State students will be
signing up for the Day of Service and
March at the Campus Life/AmeriCorps
table on Main Street in the James M.
Baker University Center from Monday,
Jan. 9 through Thursday, Jan. 12, from 10
a.m. to noon. Students will also be signing
up at the Involvement Fair on Thursday,
Jan. 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the
