transformed the campus and made Clayton State a national pioneer in
“ubiquitous computing.”
The James M. Baker University Center, Clayton State’s signature building,
completed in August 2004 and named in honor of Clayton State alumnus James
M. “Jim” Baker inNovember 2005, provides theUniversitywith a true “Center” for
University life. The building contains a cafeteria and food service area, theHUB
for servicing notebook computers, state-of-the-art visual technology classrooms,
offices and enhanced learning facilities including wireless capabilities and more
than2,000dataports.
In a six week period between August and October 2008, the University
dedicated three new buildings; theUniversity’s first student housing (Laker Hall),
the Student Activities Center and a new building for the AACSB-accredited
School of Business. The new annex to the Natural and Behavioral Sciences
Building (which was itself renovated in 2011), the Laboratory Annex Building,
addedmore laboratory space for science classes and opened in January 2011.
On November 14, 2013, the University broke ground on a new $19.8 science
building, which when completed in June 2015 will provide critically needed labs,
classroom space, and faculty offices.
The past several years at Clayton State have also been highlighted by the
establishment of the first joint state and federal archives facilities adjacent to
campus, the institution of a comprehensive strategic planning process, and the
reaffirmation of the University’s accreditation by the Southern Association of
Colleges andSchoolsCommission onColleges (SACSCOC).
Clayton State University is an NCAA Division II member, competing in one of
the top conferences in the nation at that level - the Peach Belt Conference -
which consists of 14 different institutions in Alabama, Georgia, North and South
Carolina, and Florida. The Clayton State Lakers have enjoyed much success in
their 24-year history, capped during the 2010/2011 season by the women’s
basketball team winning the national championship and finishing 35-1. In 2014
ClaytonState’swomen’s soccer programwon thePeachBelt Conference regular
season championship. ClaytonState currently fields athletic teams in;men’s and
women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s
basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track,
men’s golf andwomen’s tennis.
